Be Smarter Than Your Smart Home

Our digital age goes beyond our cellphones, laptops, and televisions. Now even our homes can be smart. Smart refrigerators make your grocery list, and then order the items. Thermostats learn our likes, dislikes, schedules. These devices can and do revolutionize our lives. However, smart homeowners wonder if they should be concerned about the security and privacy implications of the revolution.

The Convenience factor is appealing.

Smart appliances also called the Internet of Things (IoT) offer:
  • Remote control of home systems
  • Energy efficiency and cost savings
  • Personalized experiences and automation
The Potential Risks

With convenience can come vulnerability:
  • Data privacy. Smart devices collect your personal data. A smart fridge know what you eat, when you eat, how much you eat. Your smart thermostat knows when you’re home and when you are not.
  • Security breaches. Poorly secured devices become entry points for hackers into your home network.
  • Too soon old; too late smart applies to technology as well as people.  Older devices are not as smart as newer ones. Older devices may no longer be supported and updated by their maker.
Should you be concerned?

Yes, these risks are real, but you may still enjoy ‘smart’ devices by taking precautions.
  • Research before buying. Choose reputable brands with proven security records.
  • Secure your network. Use complex/strong passwords and consider a separate network for IoT devices.
  • Regular updates. Always install updates and security patches.
  • Limit the data you share. Stay aware of the information you permit your devices to collect and share.
  • Use complex passwords. If a device has a password you cannot change do not buy it.
The Bottom line

The Internet of Things is here to stay and smart appliances offer real benefits and real challenges for home security and privacy. If you stay informed and take thoughtful precautions you will enjoy the convenience of a smart home with few risks.

A little caution can go a long way in our connected world. Get smart and stay smart(er) than your smart home.
