Each December, on the first Saturday of the month, runners and walkers of all ages gather for one of La Crosse’s most festive events, the Ugly Sweater 5K, hosted by the Rotary Club of La Crosse-After Hours (RAH) as part of the beloved Rotary Lights celebration. Decked out in ugly Christmas sweaters and creative costumes, participants turn this walk/run into one of the most joyful 5Ks in the community.

RAH members and volunteers dedicate the entire Friday before the event braving the cold and setting up the course from Myrick Park to Riverside Park. The route comes alive with twinkling lights, festive inflatables, carolers, and surprise additions that delight participants each year. The race finishes in the heart of Rotary Lights, where participants enjoy an award ceremony, hot cocoa, cookies, music, and a spirited Ugly Sweater contest.

This year’s 19th Annual Ugly Sweater 5K Presented by Northwestern Mutual was a record-setting success, welcoming 705 registrants of all ages and abilities. Families, first-time runners, seasoned athletes, and walkers shared an evening filled with laughter, glowing lights, and holiday cheer. Adding to the Rotary spirit, 10 Rotary District 6250 Youth Exchange students volunteered and/or ran in the event, showcasing service in action.

For RAH, the Ugly Sweater 5K is more than aholiday tradition - it is the club’s largest annual fundraiser. Funds raisedsupport local nonprofits and community initiatives through the club’s annualgrant projects, allowing Rotary After Hours to turn festive fun intomeaningful, lasting impact throughout the La Crosse community.
