As a dedicated Rotarian, you enjoy the positive impact your club makes on your local community. You also value how you, a Midwesterner, can help change lives of people you will never meet half way across the planet.

That is the power of Rotary. That is the power of your club!

But how do you keep that spark alive in your club year after year? The secret sauce is sharing your club’s inspiring story far and wide! Whether you’re chatting with colleagues, visiting with a neighbor, or even engaging in small talk with strangers in the grocery line or on an elevator, every moment is an opportunity! And don’t fret; you won’t be winging it without a plan! The following exercise will help you confidently share your personal Rotary story and attract new members to your club’s door.

1.     FIND THE COMMON A-HA’S:

At a weekly meeting, take a few moments to have a breakout session and discuss why you are a Rotarian and a member of your club. Here are some common questions to ask:

o   What do members care about?
o   Are there similar favorite projects?
o   Are there options for volunteer service?
o   What are the benefits of being a Rotarian?
o   Do people get along, laugh, have fun, enjoy being together?
o   What does Rotary mean to each of you?

2.     WRITE IT OUT:

Take note of your similar answers and write out what resonates with you. This is what defines your club’s uniqueness and appeals to you personally. Write out the points that mean the most to you that you know would intrigue possible candidates.

Did you hear any of these?

o   Shared vision to make a difference
o   Convenient meeting time
o   It’s fun and I’ve formed positive relationships
o   Volunteer opportunities
o   Speakers about meaningful topics
o   The 4-Way test offers values and principles

3.     PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT: (Or at least not awkward!)

o   Read out loud what you have written until if feels authentic and sounds unrehearsed. (Yes, go ahead and record it!) This is your personal Rotary story!
o   Keep it under 100 words and less than :45 seconds (You want to leave room for questions!)

4.     TIME TO SHINE:

o   Keep it simple and don’t use Rotary acronyms
o   Show enthusiasm when sharing your Rotary story
o   Speak with energy and passion, but don’t rush. Remember to pause and breath slowly
o   Smile as you speak and speak a bit louder than normal
o   Be prepared to answer questions

5.     ENGAGE THEM

o   Ask them to volunteer at an event
o   Ask them out for coffee if they seem intrigued
o   Ask them to a meeting (check the schedule to make sure it is a good fit)

Try these simple steps to prepare what you will say when you are asked about your club or why you are a Rotarian. Having a quick and intentional response will allow you the opportunity to give your club the proper promotion it deserves.
