District Governor's Message

May is the month that ends (nearly) with the famous announcement in Indianapolis “Ladies and Gentlemen, start your engines!”   Well, it’s time to start revving up your plans to attend our 2019 District Conference!  We have had many people complement our team for assembling two days of rock-solid content, informative and challenging societal problems that need solving, and inspiring speakers.  If you don’t make this one, my fellow Rotarians, you’re going to miss a super meeting.  So, this is my request:  Go to the District 6250 website and register for District Conference 2019.  It’s easy, fund, and absolutely worth your time.

May is Youth Service month on the Rotary Calendar.  This opens up so many possible trains of thought and action!  Rotary as an organization is interested in young people starting before they are born!  Then when they come into the world, we’re interested in preventing them from getting many diseases.  Rotarians work to ensure all children can go to school and learn ways to make life better.  We sponsor Interact Clubs in those schools for when the kids get a little older.  We sponsor exchange programs to let those children see another side of their world – a side that may change their life forever.  In short, we serve youth.

But even beyond that, we work hard to set an example that will enable children to learn to serve.  Those Interact clubs help make better lives for others in their own communities.  Those RYLA Students learn how to become servant leaders.  And it opens an opportunity to create new Rotary Club members.  These young people have parents.  Get to know them.  Many might find the Rotary network very attractive – they’ve just never been invited.

You will meet some of these young people at our upcoming District Conference.  You will also have the chance to see if your club can help prevent those who would prey on our children, and traffic them into slavery of one sort or another.  We will demonstrate how some communities are employing new methods of solving the problem of opioid drug abuse among young people – and those not so young.  These are things your club might think are worth working on in your community.

So, go to the Rotary District 6250 web page and register – and tell your fellow Rotarians to do so!  This is a huge opportunity to be truly inspired!
With Rotary pride,

Bill Hoel
District Governor 2018-2019

SILENT AUCTION AT DISTRICT CONFERENCE

Once again, a silent auction will be held at the District Conference in La Crosse on June 7 and 8.  It would be very much appreciated if every club would bring an item that is valued at $50 or more for the auction.  All proceeds will go to Polio Plus.  We would like to have every club participate.

Also, if any club wants to display a project that their club is involved in, please let us know that as well.

Featured Speaker
Razia Jan

Born in Afghanistan, Razia moved to the United States in 1970. The proprietor of a small tailoring business in Duxbury, Massachusetts, for 20 years she served as president of the town’s Rotary Club. In the aftermath of September 11, Razia rallied her adopted New England community to send over 400 homemade blankets to rescue workers at Ground Zero after September 11. Her efforts expanded to include sending care packages to US troops in Afghanistan.

Through her involvement in the military’s Operation Shoe Fly, she coordinated the delivery of over 30,000 pairs of shoes to needy Afghan children. Her handmade quilts commemorating September 11 have been exhibited at Madison Square Garden, the chapel at the Pentagon, and at fire stations in New York and Massachusetts.

Razia has received many awards for her humanitarian work including a 2012 CNN Top 10 Hero award and multiple Rotary Club International Peace Awards.

Today, in order to continue her humanitarian work, school administration, fundraising efforts, and spending time with family, Razia travels between Afghanistan and the United States.

Join us at District Conference to hear more about Razia's amazing journey!

Important InCheck Background Check Account Update

This is an important message about your account settings with InCheck.  Please assess your desired service level and communicate with us, if needed.
Currently, when an alias name is identified on a Rotary order, InCheck is engaging the requestor to determine whether or not they would like the alias name searched for criminal records.  Please note this setting is not unique to Rotary Districts – it applies to several working relationships at InCheck.  However, we have determined this to be a failing practice for two reasons:

  1. It creates inconsistency in screening practices within an organization, as some requestors will authorize adding an alias while others might not.  It’s best that a consistent practice be applied for all candidates of the organization.
  2. It’s a time consuming expense for InCheck to draft communications, track your response, and then internally manage the hold, cancellation, or processing effort on the report.
For these reasons, we are no longer providing free custom email alerts on alias name approvals.  As a result, you must choose one of the following settings and actions:

Please note that over 90% of alias names are approved by Rotary Districts.  To remain thorough in your background screening standards, you would select option one (1) below.

  1. Take no action and InCheck will run all alias names (no approval required) effective June 1st, 2019.

Recently, InCheck had a client decline authorization to add an alias name on a report; however, because the candidate had entered an alias name during the order entry process, we happened upon a felony record under the alias name.  Searching alias names ensures a more thorough background check.

  1. Change your protocol to require InCheck to cancel all alias names automatically.  As a result we will only search the subject’s current name.   If you desire this setting, you must contact intouch@incheck.net to approve.

Please keep in mind that option two (2) would be a change in your current ordering and will reduce the thoroughness of your current background check.

  1. Keep your settings the same with the understanding that InCheck will be applying a $15.00 service fee to continue the current practice of sending emails, and the management behind holding, cancelling, and approving alias names.  If you want to approve this charge and retain your setting, we need you to contact intouch@incheck.net and approve the new expense. The $15.00 service fee will apply every time we email you.

Each service relationship we have with your Rotary District can have their own setting.  This does not need to be a global setting.

Thank you for your time and consideration on this matter.  We greatly appreciate our partnership!

RI News

The Rotarian Magazine

The Rotarian Magazine is our link to the greater Rotary world. The pictures and stories tell us of the wonderful work that is being done, in and through Rotary, to make the world a better, safer and a more peaceful place…all because we are advancing the key elements of social justice, health projects, and educational opportunity and alleviating the dire effects of poverty.

A person is not free if they are hungry. A man is not free when he has to watch his children die because of the lack of clean water or adequate food. A mother will not be free if her sick child cannot receive medical care and when people are not free they will seek social justice even if it means going to war to achieve it.

Our magazine, paid for in our RI dues, is not junk mail. It makes you and me “literate” in the great story of Rotary. Read it. Share it with others. Drop it off in a public area where literature is offered, a dentist's reception area, the waiting room at your local hospital or when you go to your accountant's office to pick up your tax filings. Plant the seeds of Rotary by sharing our great story.
