District Governor's Message

By the time you read this, registration for our 2019 District Conference of Clubs will have been open for some time.   I sincerely hope you give serious thought to attending.  We have some absolutely super inspiring speakers; some truly serious topics to learn about so we may help our own communities deal with some current crisis issues, and some serious fun to be had!

April is Maternal and Child Health month for Rotary International.  In our district, we are very much involved in this area, with both global grants and district projects.  One area that does not yet pop up on everyone’s radar when we say those words is human trafficking.  The Tomah Rotary club was a leader this past year when it held a community conversation on the topic, and helped people become more aware of the issue.  At our conference, we are going to have some experts in this field on a panel.  We will ask them to tell us what Rotary clubs can actually do to help fight this battle.

Another issue that clearly impacts Maternal and Child Health is the ongoing opioid crisis in Wisconsin.  We will have a panel discussion on this issue too – and again, ask for specifics Rotarians can do to help their towns.  And one of our keynote speakers will absolutely inspire you with her story of starting one of the first schools for girls – in Afghanistan.  She literally took her life in her hands.  Another keynoter is former Rotary International General Secretary Ed Futa.  If you want to be inspired – talk with your club’s President Elect, who saw Ed speak in Chicago at our recent training sessions.  They’ll tell you – Ed is fantastic!

We’ll also have a two hour membership summit – for club Membership Chairs.  We’ll have chances to learn about fund raising projects that might benefit your club.  We’ll have sessions where you can learn up close and personal what it’s like to be a ShelterBox volunteer in a far away place.  It’s a real adventure!  For your enjoyment we’ll have access to a wonderful outdoor Artspire art fair with live entertainment day and night, as well as various international flavored tastes of La Crosse After Dark night spots.

So go to the Rotary District 6250 web page and register – and tell your fellow Rotarians to do so!  This is a huge opportunity to be truly inspired!

With Rotary pride,

Bill Hoel

Stamp Out Polio!

Please post this in our District newsletter for clubs.  It is a great deal for $75 and $25 goes to the shoes and $50 to the world Polio fund in the person’s name that orders them.  They even use the club runners for your address to send the shoes.

v2.0 is Here!
Due to high demand, this Rotarian could not keep up with orders and decided to have new and improved Stomp Out Polio kicks professionally custom-made. There's a limited quantity of pairs and sizes for $75 each (this includes shipping). Provide your Rotary ID at checkout and the purchase amount will also be applied to your '18-'19 PolioPlus donations!

What's new in v2.0? In addition to the End Polio Now logo from the sold-out v1.0 (which in v2.0 is more precise and durable), there is now a Rotary cog on the heel and we've added an insole for comfort, which says "Be the good you want to see in the world." to remind us daily that we've got to be People of Action to achieve our vision.

Here's a breakdown of where your $75 will go:
Pair of high-tops ($17.04) + Shipping and supplies ($5) = Total shoe overhead ($22.04)
So, Purchase price ($75) - Overhead ($22.04)  = $52.96 to PolioPlus

Which means...
PolioPlus donation ($52.96)  +  Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation 2:1 match ($105.93) = Total amount of funding to PolioPlus per pair of shoes: $158.98
Please note that this production run will be the only one. While it has been amazing raising money for a great cause and getting an equally great response, being a shoe distributor isn't on my bucket list!

Rotary is 1.2M members strong, but its reach is only effective when Rotarians take action. Stomp Out Polio not only generates funds for PolioPlus, it also allows Rotarians to bring awareness to the fight against Polio.

Many non-Rotarians aren't aware of the fact that Polio still exists. By wearing these vibrant shoes out and about, we can start conversations, create allies and grow the effort towards Polio eradication.

Featured Speaker
Razia Jan

Born in Afghanistan, Razia moved to the United States in 1970. The proprietor of a small tailoring business in Duxbury, Massachusetts, for 20 years she served as president of the town’s Rotary Club. In the aftermath of September 11, Razia rallied her adopted New England community to send over 400 homemade blankets to rescue workers at Ground Zero after September 11. Her efforts expanded to include sending care packages to US troops in Afghanistan.

Through her involvement in the military’s Operation Shoe Fly, she coordinated the delivery of over 30,000 pairs of shoes to needy Afghan children. Her handmade quilts commemorating September 11 have been exhibited at Madison Square Garden, the chapel at the Pentagon, and at fire stations in New York and Massachusetts.

Razia has received many awards for her humanitarian work including a 2012 CNN Top 10 Hero award and multiple Rotary Club International Peace Awards.

Today, in order to continue her humanitarian work, school administration, fundraising efforts, and spending time with family, Razia travels between Afghanistan and the United States.

Join us at District Conference to hear more about Razia's amazing journey!

Human Trafficking and Rotary
(Would you like more information on this topic - Join us at Rotary District Conference in La Crosse for a keynote on this topic).

I recently spoke at the Tomah Rotary Community Conversations on Human Trafficking and will have the opportunity to speak at a couple of District Rotary events this spring. I am excited that Rotary has taken an interest in human trafficking as one of their missions.

I personally was affected by trafficking as my 17 year old son was sex trafficked prior to his death in 2016. I am passionate about educating others on this problem that is in every single county and tribe in Wisconsin. So many people think this is only happening in our large cities but it is right here, in our hometowns.

There are over 150 billion people trafficked in a year with only 2400 beds in the US for victims to get the help needed - less than 1%.  This is a huge  problem and I am excited to announce that a 25 bed facility is opening in Juneau County very soon called the Destiny Center. This will be the largest center in Wisconsin and 3rd in the country.

We are looking for your help in spreading the word of our fundraising efforts. Our fundraising theme is: Join Team 1K. We are looking for 1000 people to donate $10 a day for an entire year. With this we will be able to open the doors to this amazing home - not just a place to live, but a place to help victims become survivors. We will teach them how to live again, how to work, balance their finances, own their own home and have a real job. All skills they never learned while being trafficked at a young age when these life skills should be learned. Won't you help us get there? Go to our website: www.ihavedestiny.tv and click on the "Help" tab. You will see 3 ways to give (online, text or mail a check).

We are also partnering with The Palace Theatre in Wisconsin Dells for the Heart to Heart Tribute Concert on April 27, 2019. This concert is a tribute band for the 80's sensations Heart and Pat Benatar! 15% of all online ticket sales and $1 of all tickets sold at the door will be donated to Destiny Center. When ordering online use the code: Destiny15. We are challenging all Rotary Clubs to purchase tickets for their club in advance and sell them to their members in a way to support the Destiny Center. It is sure to be a great evening of music for a great cause!

If you would like more information or would like us to speak at your next meeting, please let me know. We are honored to partner with your Rotary Club to help educate and spread the word about what human trafficking is and how all of us together can help. Thank you!

RI News

The Rotarian Magazine

The Rotarian Magazine is our link to the greater Rotary world. The pictures and stories tell us of the wonderful work that is being done, in and through Rotary, to make the world a better, safer and a more peaceful place…all because we are advancing the key elements of social justice, health projects, and educational opportunity and alleviating the dire effects of poverty.

A person is not free if they are hungry. A man is not free when he has to watch his children die because of the lack of clean water or adequate food. A mother will not be free if her sick child cannot receive medical care and when people are not free they will seek social justice even if it means going to war to achieve it.

Our magazine, paid for in our RI dues, is not junk mail. It makes you and me “literate” in the great story of Rotary. Read it. Share it with others. Drop it off in a public area where literature is offered, a dentist's reception area, the waiting room at your local hospital or when you go to your accountant's office to pick up your tax filings. Plant the seeds of Rotary by sharing our great story.
