In the world of fishing, where patience meets passion, the musky is known as the "fish of 10,000 casts." Yet, Al Louis, a dedicated Rotarian from the Rotary Club of La Crosse, has defied the odds by not only catching these elusive fish but also creating waves of change through his innovative fundraising efforts.
From Passion to Purpose
Al Louis had never fished for muskies until 2004, but by 2019, this pastime had transformed into an enthusiastic passion. As his passion for musky fishing grew, so did an idea of combining his new-found passion with another passion; fundraising. It was during a late-night phone conversation with his friend David Amborn that the idea of Al's Musky Challenge was born. Louis recalled, "I was up fishing in Lake Vermilion, and I called David. I asked him if he thought we could create a way for me to fish for a cause and raise money for kids. He told me he’d get back to me.” That conversation sparked what is now known as Al’s Musky Challenge; an event born out of a passion for fishing and a desire to give back.
The Growth of Al's Musky Challenge
Now in its sixth year, Al's Musky Challenge is a testament to how hobbies can lead to significant community impact. Each year, from July to September 30, Louis and his fishing partners have ventured into the waters of Lake Vermilion, raising funds for the Rotary Club of La Crosse Beneficiary Project. Donors offer a one-time amount or pledge an amount, and more recently, sponsor guests and fellow Rotarians can even experience a musky fishing expedition – all for a price, of course.
This year, Louise caught 103 muskies and raised over $211,000. Funds from this year’s event supported two nonprofit agencies, each receiving $67,500, and has bolstered an endowment fund aimed at reaching a $1 million target.
Louis credits his friend Amborn, who sadly passed unexpectedly in ‘21, for the success of the Challenge. Louis said, "We kind of do this in his memory now. He started all of this with me and he’s watching over us. If it wasn't for him, none of this would have gotten started."
A Community-wide Event
The Musky Challenge is more than just a fundraiser; it is a celebration of community and camaraderie. Louis praises the efforts of his committee, fellow Rotarians, and donors, both locally and nationwide, who so graciously continue to give to this event. He humbly states, "I get to fish for kids, have fun, see nature, drive around in a boat -- well, get driven around -- because I don’t drive, and bring money back to our community. It's a lot of fun, and I’m a lucky guy."
